Avoid the No-Drone Zone

Let students know that experienced pilots use a checklist before they fly, so they don’t forget any safety rules. Here is a No-Drone Zone checklist to help teach students safe flying tips:

  1. Always fly your drone in an open area, where you can clearly see your drone and your sightlines.
  2. Never fly in windy weather or when there is thunder or lightning.
  3. Keep your drone away from trees and people.
  4. Never fly your drone over or into any of these facilities:
    • Electric power lines
    • Utility poles
    • Electric substations
    • Water treatment facilities
    • Wind turbines
    • Airports
    • Other aircraft

If a Drone Goes Where It Shouldn’t

If a student’s drone goes into any No-Drone Zone facilities, they should NOT try to retrieve it! Tell them to inform an adult immediately and call 911 to report the incident. Students should be prepared to give their address and the nearest cross street if asked for it.

If a student’s drone gets stuck on a utility pole or line or inside a substation, tell them to move far away from the area and warn others to move away as well.

If a student’s drone has caused an electric power line to fall to the ground, tell them to stay very far away! Even if they are not sparking or humming, fallen power lines can harm anyone who touches them or the ground nearby. Call 911 to report the fallen line.
